Pulver vs. Faber

Rather than do an entire preview on the upcoming WEC event, I thought it would be best to give my thoughts on the one fight everyone is tuning in to see....Pulver vs. Faber.

This is without question the biggest fight in the history of the featherweight division. Both fighters are proficient in finishing fights and love to be aggressive and control the pace of the fight. And while they have both dominated the 145 pound division, their similarities end there.

Outside the cage, they are polar opposites. Urijah Faber, the California Kid, grew up in sunny California playing roller hockey and surfing. Jens "Little Evil" Pulver grew up in Washington state, living a life that he called "... a daily hell" in an abusive home. Faber possesses pretty boy good looks and a Bachelor's Degree in human development. Jens has cauliflower ears and a Masters Degree from the school of hard knocks. While Faber's father often shows up at the gym to monitor his son's training sessions, Pulver trains to better a name that his father shamed.

Pulver is widely considered the underdog in this fight. Faber is younger, faster, and his stock is on the rise. He is a marketable champion for a young organization. Sherdog.com has Faber listed as the #1 featherweight in the world while Pulver isn't even on the list.

I will admit it. I'm a Jens Pulver fan. I have watched every video of him on youtube. Ive practiced his dirty boxing techniques in my living room at midnight while the family is asleep. When the possibility came up of interviewing him for this blog (one of those friend of a friend type of deals that didn't work out) I became even more enamoured. I even converted my wife, a fan of Faber due to his flowing locks and rock hard abs. Pulver cant possibly win though, right?

My Prediction: Pulver by knockout.

Pulver has been training like never before. He is possibly in the best shape of his life. While I take nothing away from Faber, I don't think he has ever been hit as hard as he is going to be hit on Sunday night. I expect Pulver to come straight at him, and if he can avoid the take down, which given his world class wrestling skills is a real possibility, I think he can control the fight. Pulver is the better puncher and he will win this fight by keeping it standing.

Either way it goes, this is one for the ages. On one hand you would have Faber, the current champ and heavy favorite to win this fight. A victory over Pulver would only legitimize his meteoric rise to the top of the featherweight division. On the other, Pulver, the guy who was supposed to be on his way out. The old guard, with one more shot at glory before riding off into the sunset. Pulver has nothing to lose and everything to gain. He has already restored his previously tarnished family name as one of the best fighters in MMA and a win against Faber would only go farther to prove his legend. I for one, cant wait.

Elite XC Primetime

How could I possibly call myself a huge MMA fan and not blog about the first ever MMA event on live network television? You're right. I can't. So here goes.

James "The Colossus" Thompson (14-8) vs. Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson (2-0)
This one promises to be a real slobber knocker. I dont see either fighter wanting to go to the ground. Given the press surrounding this fight, Im sure these two guys will give the fans in attendance and the millions at home exactly what they came to see...two big men standing toe to toe throwing punches. Thompson is a huge man. At 6'5" and 265 pounds, I doubt Kimbo faced anyone with those dimensions on the mean streets of Miami. Despite being a huge underdog and losing his last two fights, he does hold notable wins over veterans Don Frye and Dan Severn. The knock on Thompson is his weak chin. Seven of his eight losses come by way of knockout. Kimbo on the other hand has a remarkable chin. Granted, he has not been tested by a top level fighter and still won't have been after this contest. Bottom line is, for the enjoyment of the fans and the good of the sport Elite XC needs to sign some top heavyweight talent so we can see if this guy is for real.

Prediction: Slice by knockout, first round.

Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith (13-4) vs. "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler (15-4)

This fight will be for the Elite XC middleweight championship and should also be a standing affair. Of their combined 28 wins, 23 have come by way of knockout. Lawler has more notariety having fought on the big stages in the UFC. I honestly see this fight going either way. Whoever lands the big punch first will take it.

Prediction: Lawler by Knockout, first round.

Kaitlin Young (4-1) vs. Gina "Conviction" Carano (5-0)
I have to be brutally honest. I dont know a thing about woman fighters. Carano has the name recognition based on the fact that she is "Crush" on American Gladiators and she is being promoted as the face of women fighting. Any prediction here would be ridiculous on my part as I have never seen either one of these ladies throw a punch. Either way it goes, lets hope for a great display of MMA skills that brings positive attention to the sport.

Phil "New York Bad Ass" Baroni (10-9)vs. Joey "Smokin Joe" and "Dream Smasher" Villasenor (25-6)
This is my prediction for fight of the night. Phil Baroni is a very exciting fighter who is easy to hate. He is a loud mouth, pompous, arrogant guy....that I love. After a previous win in the UFC he climbed to the top of the cage and proceeded to yell, "IM THE MAN" 27 times in a row. He is exciting for one reason, he either hands out a beat down, or takes one. History says he needs to come out swinging as his record is 1-5 when the fight goes to the score card. Joey Villasenor however has quietly made a nice career for himself with a very respectable record rattling off a 15 fight win streak at one point in his career. He also holds the MMA record for fastest knockout when he dispatched Hank Weis in 5 seconds. Villasenor is well versed in submission fighting but also has knockout power. Look for him to score the take down and pound it out.

Prediction : Villasenor by TKO, second round

Jon "The Sherpa" Murphy (4-2) vs. Brett "The Grim" Rogers (6-0)

Murphy is a relative unknown heavyweight. He does posess knockout power with 3 knockouts in his 4 wins. Brett Rogers is also a devastating puncher with 5 fights stopped by way of knockout. His last fight was a win over tonights main event underdog James Thompson. This is another fight set up to be a slugfest.

Prediction: Rogers by Knockout, second round.

This should be a good night of fights. Elite XC has done the smart thing by loading the card with fighters that like to throw. Considering the average person tunes in to see the knockout, Elite XC appears to be giving the fans what they want.

In my opinion, this is the biggest MMA event in the history of the sport, not necessarily because of the fight card, but because of the fact that two of the sports most marketable names in Carano and Slice have a real chance to push this sport to the next level. I for one hope they deliver.

If you are a straight UFC fan, dont worry. Spike is running an all day TUF marathon followed by a Chuck Liddell special and then the Wanderlei Silva vs Chuck Liddell fight from UFC 79.

TUF 7 - Episode 9

The producers of the show have once again graced us with two fights. I really like the fact that they have watered down the weigh in and training scenes and are showing more fights. We did however get to see more antics at the house this week. Being a "husky" guy, I can now say that Jesse Gray is my new favorite fighter. That guy eats worse than I do. His steady diet of microwave cheeseburgers and hostess cupcakes is bound to have him in the heavyweight division before long. He was 5 pounds overweight heading in to the bout but was able to lose it by playing ping pong in the plastic suit and peeing in his shorts on the deck next to the hot tub. The greatest part was him climbing right back in with his soiled shorts. His opponent, Dante Rivera soon joins him without knowing that Jesse had tainted the water. Dante hops right in and proceeds to fully immerse himself in the water. Jesse of course is lauging the entire time.

Since there are 6 members of Team Forrest and only 2 for Team Rampage, a coin is tossed to determine who will corner Dante Rivera and Matt Brown. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but it turned out to be a large factor in one of the fights.

The first fight features Jesse Gray (6-2) vs. Dante Rivera (10-2). After exhchanging a few blows, Jesse gets an easy takedown. He shows a very impressive ground and pound and easily wins the round staying on top the entire time. In round two, its more of the same. Easy takedowns followed by solid striking and heavy elbows are leaving Dante very frustrated. He mounts no offense and Jesse easily takes the win. Its hard to fault Dante as he was at a huge disadvantage. Everytime Dante would start to work for a submission from the bottom, his former trainers at Team Forrest would see it coming and let Jesse know what he was attempting. This had to be extremely frustrating for Dante. It was almost as if Jesse had a blueprint of his game plan. I think they should have made it where neither coach could corner the fighters and let members of the team do it.

I also wanted to point out how smart Jesse was in this fight. Some would call him a wuss for not finishing the fight. However, Dante is skilled on the ground and Jesse did the right thing. After dominating the first round, it was a foregone conclusion that he would win. In this type of format it is important to come out of your fight unharmed and ready to fight again. These fighters do not get a 3 month break between fights. Fighters need to see the bigger picture and Jesse did the right thing by sewing up the victory and saving his body for the next match.

Our second fight of the night was Amir Sadollah (0-0) vs. Matt Brown (9-6). This was really a fantastic fight. The fighter went back and forth between trading punches and kicks to knees in the clinch. Despite a flurry at the end from Amir which includes a huge kick to the kidney, Matt seems to get the better of the exchanges and in my opinion wins the round 10-9. Amir is really a tough guy. He took Matt Brown's best punches and stayed on his feet.

Round two begins with more stiff punches from Matt. The fighters go back to the clinch and coming out of it Matt lands a big knee followed by a punch combination that appears to hurt Amir. After another clinch, Amir executes a trip takedown and immediately transitions to the mount. From there he drops heavy punches and elbows. Amir pins him to the cage and starts inflicting some serious damage. Matt sweeps and gains top position but leaves his head and arms exposed. Amir quickly locks in the triangle and before you know it Matt Brown is tapping and Amir has pulled off the upset.

Amir really showed something in this fight. He was willing to stand up and trade with a tough chin and the ability to throw some good kicks of his own. He also showed good ground and pound and the ability to work for submissions. Despite having no professional fights, he could be the dark horse to win this competition.

Two fights are on the card next week as well. We will see C.B. Dolloway (one half of the sunglass sisters) vs. Cale Yarbrough and Dan Cramer vs. Tim Credeur. Additionally the semi-final fights will be announced.

TUF 7 - Episode 8

As usual, this weeks episode starts off with a recap of last weeks fights, and the verbal bout between Rampage and Forrest.

Forrest is shown in the back "remodeling" the dressing room. His anger fueled tirade is capped off with a little shadow boxing, all the while his eyes are glazed over and he is muttering something to himself. Seriously, I think Forrest would have gladly stepped in the ring with Rampage right then and there. This dude is nuts. Luckily Dana White and his team of doctors are on hand and they give Forrest a shot of Ritalin. He spends the rest of the episode playing barbie dolls in the corner while drooling on himself. OK, that last part was a joke but it could have happened. The guy is that crazy.

In a surprising move, Patrick Shultz makes a sincere apology to Forrest for popping off last week after his loss. He tells Forrest how much he respects him and how he should have kept his mouth shut and the two share a hug. Give me a break. I'm ok with hugging after a fight. Heck, I am even ok with the apology, but the hug was over the line. Whats next, a soothing cup of tea? This is fighting for Pete's sake.

Forrest decides that it is time to have a little fun with Rampage. Somehow, they acquire a gun that shoots out a net that will wrap around your intended target. After a few test fires, Forrest decides that they need to net Rampage. This is a 50/50 move in my book. Sure he may take it as joke, but if he doesn't, the chances of Rampage killing a couple of people isn't off the list of possibilities. Forrest throws caution to the wind and heads out to the Octagon where Rampage is training, aims, and lets fire. A direct hit. Rampage is now tangled in the web. Luckily for Forrest, Rampage takes it all in stride. Later in the show, he takes his revenge by hosing Forrest down with a super soaker.

Quick side note. Rampage is a great guy. He is also absolutely hilarious. The whole "netting" prank leads to some really funny comments from Rampage. The fact that this guy can turn the switch between hardcore trainer/fighter/killer and fun loving dude is really cool. In my opinion the first Griffin/Bonnar fight is the best MMA fight I have ever witnessed and since that fight, I have been a Forrest fan. However, since watching this season of TUF, I cant help but find myself hoping Rampage beats him like a rented mule. He really comes across as a guy that people will want to root for. At one point during the show, he clowns C.B. for getting locked in a knee bar. C.B. throws a playful kick at Rampage. Rampage decides that the kick was an invitation to spar and immediately empties his pockets on the Octagon floor. C.B. squares up and after a couple seconds of circling the ring, C.B. locks in a choke and forces the light heavyweight champ to tap out! Rampage is shown smiling and remarks "He really kicked my ass. He's - he's pretty good."

On to the fight. This weeks fight features C.B. Dolloway (6-0) vs Nick Klein (4-0). Dolloway was the first overall pick for Rampage and thus has a lot of pressure to win this fight. Dolloway comes off as extremely confident and even a little cocky. Klein on the other hand, expresses doubt and even calling himself the weakest link on the team leading his team mates to give a quick counseling session. This really ticked me off. Hey Klein, you are a fighter. Grow a pair and stop acting like a little kid who just got called out by the neighborhood bully. I always root for the underdog in situations like this, but now I was hoping that Dolloway would ground and pound him for the knockout win.

The fight starts and surprisingly Dolloway, a former All-American wrestler at ASU seems content to stand and trade. Even more surprisingly, Keline shoots in and scores a take down. The advantage doesn't last long as he is quickly swept and Dolloway is on top. Dolloway starts the ground and pound but Nick does a great job of staying active and scrambling from the bottom. He takes some punishment but is able to avoid suffering too much damage. Dolloway clearly wins round one but looks a little tired heading back to his corner. Do we have an upset in the making?

Round two starts and again the fighters appear ready to stand up and throw. Forrest is in the corner begging and screaming for Klein to throw some hard punches. The fighters go to the clinch and this is where the fight turns. As Dolloway grabs Klein in the clinch, Klein inexplicably decides to pull guard. WHAT?! Dolloway wasnt even trying to take him down and he falls to his back. Great plan Klein, being on your back and having a steady diet of BBQ elbows worked really great for you in the first round. Did I mention Dolloway was an All-American? This might have been the dumbest move so far this season and it really only lends one conclusion. Nick Klein wanted no more of C.B. Dolloway. He soon gets his wish as Dolloway punishes him for a while before sinking in the guillitine choke for the win. This was probably the most technical fight of the first round and I think inexperience got the best of Nick Klein. I would not be surprised to see both of these guys in the UFC someday.

After the first round of fights it is Team Forrest 6, Team Rampage 2. The fighters are interviewed to see who they want to fight. C.B. Dolloway begs for a fight against Cale Yarbrough because Cale made fun of his sun glasses. I dont get it C.B. I really like your glasses......my wife has a pair just like them. The second round fights are posted and they are as follows....

Jesse Taylor (Team Forrest) vs. Dante Rivera (Team Forrest)
Amir Sadollah (Team Forrest) vs. Matt Brown (Team Forrest)
Dan Cramer (Team Rampage) vs. Tim Croduer (Team Forrest)
C.B. Dolloway (Team Rampage) vs. Cale Yarbrough (Team Forrest)

Overall I would give the first round of fights a B-. I was really hoping that the "fight your way in" aspect of the show would weed out the lesser fighters. For the most part it did, but we still saw some guys lay down in their fights. It is however a show to promote new fighters so I guess some of that is to be expected.

Kimbo Slice - Champ or Chump?

***Note - After publishing this post, I found out that Kimbo will be featured on the cover of ESPN the magazine. The article can be found at espn.com.

Kimbo Slice is probably the single most talked about fighter in MMA today. It seems everyone has an opinion one way or another on the former street fighter turned MMA brawler. I, am no different.

The facts are hard to deny. Kimbo is certainly a devastating striker. He is big, strong, fearless. He is brash and unapologetic with his gold teeth and shaggy beard. His jewelery is reminiscent of something you would see in a "Mr. T" starter kit. I would rather be caught in a lions den wearing pork chop underwear than get in the cage with this beast however. Type his name into the search bar on youtube and you can see him knockout dozens of helpless opponents. In one video, he stands there with his chin out, begging his opponent to hit him. The opponent does, and Kimbo shakes it off and responds with a punch of his own, sending his opponent to the grass. In his first two sanctioned professional bouts he has knocked out his foes in devastating fashion. The knock on Kimbo is that he hasn't fought anyone with any talent. In two pro fights he fought Bo Cantrell, and "The Artist Formerly Known as Tank Abbott." Here is the kicker though....who cares?

Lets face it, us hardcore MMA fans can appreciate the science of two brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelts working for position on the ground and attempting or thwarting submission moves for 15 minutes. But, if you were to poll MMA fans across the country and ask them what they want to see, the answer would almost always be the same. Much like most auto racing fans going to races to see the big wreck, casual fans of MMA want to see the big knockout. As a self professed huge fan of fighting I do too, and I am not ashamed to admit it.

Kimbo is a huge draw and deserves all the press he is getting. Like him or not, he is bringing more attention and new fans to the world of MMA than the current UFC heavyweight champ Anotonio Nogueira. In a world dominated by the internet, Kimbo carved out a niche for himself and parlayed that into the main event slot at the first MMA event to be broadcast on network television. He has added respect to his fight game by aligning himself with one of the greatest trainers in the sport in Bas Rutten. Rutten claims he has never seen a fighter train as hard as Kimbo does. Now does any of this mean he deserves to fight in the main event of the biggest event in MMA history? Based on his resume no. Based on his name, yes. There isn't another heavyweight in the world right now that has the name recognition of Kimbo Slice. Would he stand a chance against the likes of Fedor or Couture at this point in his career? Likely not, but the 3-4 million people that tune into Elite XC Saturday Night Fights are not going to care. We all want to see the same thing, Kimbo knocking James Thompson into the third row. Well, that and the fact that I have a crush on Crush, but that is a topic for another article.

Preview: UFC 84 Ill Will

Here is a preview for the upcoming UFC 84 Pay Per View. I will only be previewing the fights on the main card because really, who wants to read about Rameau Sokoudjou vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura....who? Exactly my point. Interestingly enough, 4 our of 5 events on the card will be in the light heavyweight division.

Thiago Silva (11-0) vs. Antonio Mendes (14-2)

Mendes, a new fighter to the UFC is currently riding an 11 bout win streak. Of those 11 wins, 8 came by knockout or submission. One of his two losses was a doctor stoppage due to a cut. He is well versed in Thai boxing and will look to keep the fight standing

Silva is an accomplished fighter who Sherdog.com actually lists as 12-0, with only one win by decision. Silva, also a striker poses devestating knockout power and is on a 3 fight win streak in the UFC.

Personally, I like Silva in this contest. He has faced much tougher opponents in his career and has the experience factor of fighting in front of the huge crowds in the UFC.

Prediction: Silva by knockout in the first round.

Tito Ortiz (16-5-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (12-0)

This should be an outstanding fight. The "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" has a lot to prove before he heads off and signs a huge free agent contract with EliteXC. His ongoing feud with Dana White is well chronicled and will only serve to add fuel to the fire in what already promised to be a great match up. Machida is undefeated at (4-0) thus far in the octagon.

Although Machida is new to the UFC, he does hold victories over former middleweight champ Rich "Ace" Franklin by TKO, and current lightweight champ B.J. Penn by unanimous decision. Ortiz has only lost to two men in the last 7 years, Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture. His most recent bout was a draw with Rashad Evans that would have been a victory had Tito not been deducted a point for grabbing the cage. Otiz, known for his great conditioning and ground and pound will look for an early take down. Machida too is comfortable on the ground so don't expect to see a slug fest. True fans of MMA should be impressed with the ground game of both men.

Prediction: This one kills me because I know he is going to act like a pompous jerk afterward but here goes.....Tito Ortiz, Split decision.

Wilson Gouveia (10-4) vs. Goran Reljic (7-0)

Gouveia is 4-0 since a disappointing loss at the hands of tough guy Keith Jardine in the TUF Season 3 finale. He does however hold a knockout victory over welterweight contender Jon Fitch. Gouveia is a brazilian jiu-jitsu/submission specialist with only 2 of his 14 pro fights going to the judges scorecards. Reljic is a newcomer to the UFC. He also is proficient in brazilian jiu-jitsu with 5 of his 7 fights coming by submission.

Look for these guys to go to the ground right away and battle for position. This one will start and finish on the mat.

Prediction: Gouveia by submission, second round

Wanderlei Silva (31-8-1) vs. Keith Jardine (13-4-1)

Finally a slug fest! Silva is a very unimpressive 1-3 in the octagon, but don't be fooled. This guy is one of the most skilled fighters in the world of MMA. His laundry list of big wins includes Vitor Belfort, Dan Henderson, and Quinton Jackson twice. He is known as a striker with 21 of his 31 victories coming by knockout. He has seen his skills diminish over the last couple of years as he creeps up in age. Keith Jardine is a heavy contender to compete with Rampage for the light heavyweight crown. Jardine has been up and down in his last three fights. After a big knockout win over Forrest Griffin and a disappointing knockout loss to Houston Alexander, he bounced back with an impressive decision over former lightweight champ Chuck Liddell.

This one is my pick for fight of the night. What better than two guys with good chins who like to throw leather. This is a really tough fight to call with both fighters willing to stand and trade. Either way, this isn't going to a decision.

Prediction: Jardine by knockout, second round.

B.J. Penn (13-4-1) vs. Sean Sherk (35-2-1)

This should also be a thrilling fight. B.J. Penn looked dominating in his last fight against up and comer Joe Stevensen. B.J. has beaten some big names in the sport including Matt Serra, Takanori Gomi, Matt Hughes, and two Gracie's. He is a well rounded fighter who can stand and throw or play the ground game with the best fighters in the world. Shawn Sherk is back in action after a positive steroid test that stripped him of his belt and forced him to serve a suspension. Sherk is a physical specimen and has outstanding cardio. His only loss in his last 17 fights was a TKO by current welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre.

I expect to see the full compliment of MMA fighting skills on display. Both fighters are comfortable standing or on the mat and this should make for an explosive fight. Given the cardio and condition that both of these fighters are in, I expect it to go the distance.

Prediction: Sean Sherk, decision.

TUF 7 - Episode 7

At the end of last weeks episode, we hear Luke Zachrich complain about being over trained for his fight. Apparently, the only one feeling the affects of over training is Luke himself as both of his teammates won tonight, giving team Forrest a 6-1 record in the first round of fights.

The first fight of the night featured Amir Sadollah (0-0) of Team Forrest vs Gerald Harris (7-2) of Team Rampage. This was quite possibly the most boring fight of the first round. The entertainment value of this fight ranked somewhere between doing the dishes and a WHAM reunion tour. To start the bout, Gerald looked very focused and ready to take the fight to Amir. On the other side of the Octagon, Amir appeared cautious and unsure of what to expect. Gerald scored a few takedowns in the first round and proceeded to drop a few lazy elbows and half hearted punches. He seemed perfectly content with scoring the take down points and never really attempted to finish the fight. This strategy led to nothing more than giving Amir confidence that Gerald could not hurt him.

Round 2 opens and the fighters appear to be happy to stand and trade for a little while. Big mistake on Geralds part. Amir loads up and delivers a knee to the side of the head, which drops Gerald and mercifully ends the fight. For a while there, I could not tell if this was the UFC or Dancing with the Stars. Amir climbs on top and pounds him out for the win. Yawn. This is 7 minutes and 24 seconds of my life that I will never get back. The knee must have made Gerald lose track of his senses. For a mintue he forgets he is fighting in the UFC and proceeds to throw a hissy fit usually reserved for cast members of The Real World. His rant continues to the locker room where he claims he let his family down and that his 7 year old son would see him lose. News flash for you Gerald....you should be upset, you fought like a wussie. Worse than that though, not only did you give the fight away, but you acted like a child in the wake of your loss even refusing to acknowledge your opponent in the ring. No one likes a crybaby Gerald, especially Dana White. On a side note, Forrest told Amir that if he won, he would shave half of his head. Just when we thought he could not possibly get any uglier, he is now going to parade around with a stupid hair cut. Lucky us. Hey Dana, more shots of the ring card girls please!

Tonight was a special 2 fight episode. Luckily the producers of the show also realized that the first fight was garbage and decided to show a second bout. Fight 2 featured Cale Yarbrough (0-0) of Team Forrest vs. Patrick Schultz (7-1-1) of Team Rampage. Unlike the first fight, this one was loaded with action. The fighters remained on their feat and slugged it out for the majority of the round. Patrick found a home for his jab at the end of Cale's nose. The jab was incredibly effective and he was able to keep Cale off balance for most of the round. After a steady diet of leather, Cale takes Patrick down and for the last minute of the round showed a very effective ground and pound.

As we head to round 2, Patrick Shultz decided that the best thing to do would be to abandon his game plan of crisp jabs mixed in with solid overhand punches and lower leg kicks, and started throwing haymakers. His looping wild punches missed the mark time after time and you could see the gas tank rapidly drain. If memory serves, this is the same strategy that got him a nap in the preliminary round. Cale took advantage of this and quickly went for the take down. From the top, he moved Patrick to his corner and proceeded to punish him from the half guard for the rest of the round. This fight goes to the judges and Cale Yarbrough is the winner. This was a great fight. Cale is the type of fighter that could make a good showing in the UFC. He has great conditioning, likes to strike, and stayed active the entire fight.

Patrick wasnt quite satisfied with getting his ass handed to him, so he decided to pop off to Forrest with something to the effect of "We'll see what happens when you fight Rampage." Ummmm what?! You get your butt whipped and the best you can come up with is "My dad can beat up your dad?" This leads to a verbal outburst by Rampage who spouts "Betcha our fight dont go to no decision, betcha! I would bet my purse on it."

All in all, this has been a strange season of TUF. The producers have decided to show very little footage of activity in the house and have mostly shown training scenes and the fights. This season has also come up short on developing rivalries. With the exception of Jeremy May, who even his own teammate's cant stand, there has been no hatred or ill will among the fighters. I think adding some of the footage at the house and showing the arguments and disagreements would help to promote the fights and make them more exciting at the end of the show.

On the flip side, they are doing a good job of promoting Rampage. By beating Chuck Liddell, Rampage has set himself up to be the guy that carries the torch for the UFC and for big PPV draws. Rampage seems to be a charismatic and fun loving guy outside the ring. Couple that with the fact that he has the ability to kill someone with his bare hands, and you have the kind of guy you can market to new fans of the UFC. I hope they continue to show his personality and his roller coaster of emotions.

I have watched every season of TUF and so far, this season has been a disappointment. There doesnt seem to be a Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, or Joe Stevenson type fighter in the house. Hopefully the second round fights will be more competitive and a fighter or two will start to emerge as the dominate favorite. The problem I am having is that with this season, there isnt a fighter in the house that I care about. I dont have a favorite team. I find myself watching each episode with the hopes of seeing a big knockout, not a great fight by a fighter or team that I like. Hopefully round 2 will be better.

Next week on the blog I will review the final fight of the frst round between C.B. Dolloway and Nick Klein. Also, I will be posting a preview and prediction article for UFC 84 Ill Will.

Lets get it on!

I am a huge MMA fan and a wanna-be writer, so I figured why not combine the two? I did a preview on UFC 83 for a buddy and went 5-5 on outcome, 4-5 on method, and 4-5 on round it would happen. He suggested I put more stuff in print so here goes! On this blog you will find pre fight reviews, post fight reviews, and any random thoughts, rumblings, grumblings, or general opinions that I have on the world of MMA. Feel free to respond with a comment if you hate it, love it, or have a question. Thanks!

P.S. Thanks Steve for the nudge. You still suck at poker.
